The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) 2016 will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 8th to 12th December.
The Civil Society Days of the GFMD will take place 8- 9 December, the Common Space on the 10th and the governments days on 11th and 12th December.
As chair of the 2015 Civil Society Days in Istanbul and member of the Civil Society International Steering Committee (ISC), Ignacio Packer for Terre des Hommes and Destination Unknown Campaign is strongly involved in organization and programming of the GFMD Civil Society Days and in giving input to the Governments ahead of the GFMD. The International Catholic Migration Committee is mandated for the coordination for civil society.
The Civil Society Days of the GFMD, and also the GFMD Common Space, together with Bangladesh, the government 2016 GFMD Chair.
Civil society’s overall theme this year is: “Time for Action: Doing rights-based governance of migration and development in our communities and across borders”
The GFMD Civil Society Days 2016 are taking place, only three months after the 19 September Summit on refugees and migrants. As detailed in the Civil Society Days Concept Note, this year’s programme will be strongly linked to the outcomes of the High-level Summit.
The government days of the 9th GFDM will be held under the overarching theme
“Migration that works for Sustainable Development of all: Towards a Transformative Migration Agenda”.
This year’s Forum is focused on three main pillars: economics, sociology and governance of migration and development. The overarching theme is based on a ‘SDG Plus’ approach, i.e. to incorporate and advance, in the context of deliverables, a range of migration specific issues, ideas and elements that have already been recognized inter alia in the two UN General Assembly High level Dialogues on International Migration and Development (2007, 2013) and in various other dialogues/platforms, global consultative processes and outcome documents over the past decade.
Destination Unknown Campaign and Terre des Hommes will be participating in Dhaka.

At the Workshop on “Migration for Harmonious Societies”, Ignacio Packer, took the floor as Civil Society’s contributor. His intervention consisted of a reflection and suggestions on the language which is used on the topic of migration with as underlying question “Does language change the way we think? ”
At the 2nd Meeting of the GFMD Business Mechanism Thematic Meeting, he was one of the speaker of the round table “Access of refugees to the labor market”.
