Kosovar people have started to migrate in increasing numbers once again in November 2014 with the peak in January-March 2015. This topic tries to collect resources on the issue.

News on the flow  -with some numbers:

I would like to add some information about the current situation about Kosovo migrants. Since the migration flow decreased substantially during the second part of last year, return of the migrants from EU countries to Kosovo followed. On mid January 2016, The Ministry of Internal Affairs reports  that 17 000 migrants returned to Kosovo and this issue brings additional problems in terms of reintegration and the return process is anticipated to follow throughout this year. As a follow up meeting, the ministry together with the municipalities will have to continue with awareness campaigns and with the management of repatriation funds. However, as in previous circumstances following the 1998-1999 conflict, reintegration is more challenging that merely the costs of sheltering or additional social assistance.

According to Frontex,  a record 12,000 attempts at illegal border crossings were registered on the Serbian-Hungarian border in December 2014, with Kosovars accounting for 40% of that number. The trend, Frontex states, is explained by rumors among the Kosovo population that France’s decision to remove Kosovo from the list of safe countries of origin would facilitate getting asylum in the EU country.

The eighth Kosovo Human Development Report tackles the challenging linkages between migration and human development. The report analyses the impact of migration on demography, economy, social inclusion, education, health (-care) and public participation. The report drew attention due to three important facts:

One out of every four Kosovans currently lives and resides outside of Kosovo; Financial flows from members of the Diaspora correspond to one fifth of Kosovo’s GDP, and for the first time in Kosovo, an analysis of data on migration has been conducted from a human development perspective.

There is no precise information on the number of Albanians who ave left Kosovo. Estimates in early February cite several hundred leaving daily. According to data provided by security forces, over the past two months, more than 50,000 have left, while media estimate 100,000 since August 2014.
