The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) has adopted the General comment 25 on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment.
The document aims to:
- Support governments on finding ways to keep children safe online;
- Raise awareness on the risks children are exposed to in the digital world;
- Reaffirms CRC core principles including non-discrimination, best interest of the child, children`s rights to life, survival and development, respect for children`s views and evolving capacities to be considered in online environments.
As children shifted even more towards online life, the urgency of the creation of this document has grown:
2/3 of the global population is online, and 1/3 of those are under the age of 18.
- Amal Al-Dossari, Co-coordinator of the Working Group on CRC General Comment 25, announces in their joint welcoming speech, available in the video below.
