The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) has adopted the General comment 25 on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment.

The document aims to:

  • Support governments on finding ways to keep children safe online;
  • Raise awareness on the risks children are exposed to in the digital world;
  • Reaffirms CRC core principles including non-discrimination, best interest of the child, children`s rights to life, survival and development, respect for children`s views and evolving capacities to be considered in online environments.

As children shifted even more towards online life, the urgency of the creation of this document has grown:

                                2/3 of the global population is online, and 1/3 of those are under the age of 18.

- Amal Al-Dossari, Co-coordinator of the Working Group on CRC General Comment 25, announces in their joint welcoming speech, available in the video below.

The General Comment is grounded on the largest contribution ever made to the Committee of the Rights of the Child:

  • 709 children from all over the world took part in the development of the General Comment;
  • 40 nation states and hundreds of organizations;
  • 50 dedicated experts from 28 countries.
