South Asia: case series highlight the need for improvement of support for children with schizophrenic parents, local case report given

Context

  • Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that causes significant impact on both sufferers and their families
  • Needs of children with affected parents are often overlooked, and only limited evidence exists that looks at the impact of the illness on children

Children with affected parents

  • Professionals report children emotionally detached from parents, yet fear the uncertainty and crave normalcy
  • Despite significant heritable component to schizophrenia, psychotic symptoms of children do not necessarily foreshadow impending schizophrenia
  • Researchers urge professionals to first exclude organic causes, substance induced psychosis or Munchausen syndrome by proxy before diagnosing schizophrenia when a child shows psychotic symptoms

Case Report

  • A 12-year-old girl was repeatedly brought to a psychiatric clinic by her schizophrenic mother who requested urgent psychiatric evaluation
  • Upon evaluation, child was actually found to be depressed due to prolonged exposure to psychological distress in her home
  • Her mother’s preoccupation with worries about her child presenting chronic mental illness similar to hers did more harm than good to the child
  • Case is a unique presentation of a child who has a parent with schizophrenia, highlighting the countless biological, psychological and social factors leading to such children being brought to mental health servicesAA
