Professionals working with vulnerable children went even further to support families during the coronavirus pandemic.

Children & Young People Now (CYP Now) invites everyone in the field of protection to nominate those they consider to have been true heroes in the last 12 months.

Here are some of them that have been nominated by their colleagues so far:

  • Eugenia Kaye, Young Women Coordinator at SoapBox Youth Center - In SoapBox, everything is dedicated to young women on Mondays, and since April 2020, Eugenia has taken all its pre-pandemic work to a new level through the 'No Ceiling' project. Eugenia acted as leading support to young people through four weekly sessions dedicated to positive mental health, pastoral support, and personal planning, through a universal skills-building framework. She has also worked with young people to organize a series of conferences to help her peers prepare for the most demanding landscapes in employment.
  • Jamil Mungul, head of digital and technological technologies at the SoapBox youth center - Jamil’s journey in SoapBox began three years ago when, by his own admission, he joined as a young person who lacked enthusiasm, personal ambition, and a sense of direction. He started working as a volunteer, and now as a paid staff member. However, the journey, as for many of his peers, was not without challenges, and the lockdown caused by the pandemic will only show the impact it will have on him and his continuation and status in the environment. But as SoapBox’s online work grew, so did Jamil’s role and importance. He graduated in July last year with an undergraduate Game Design and that was a key moment for his progress.
  • Mel Braden, head of the YMCA Black Country Group nursery - Mel manages six settings registered for 368 places in disadvantaged areas throughout Montenegro and employs a team of 70 junior practitioners. Sally Cowan, chief operating officer of Black Country Group, said: “During the pandemic, Mel continued to work to provide opportunities to provide quality care to vulnerable children and their families. She supported her team of staff, ensured that we operated in a safe Covid-19 environment, and dealt with the inevitable task of closing bubbles as needed, resolving deals, and meeting the needs of key workers.
