Cyprus: migrant families separated upon sea-arrival to Cyprus, contravening international and EU law

Issue at hand:

  • Allegations against Cypriot border forces violating international and EU human rights rise as voices from separated families begin to be heard
  • Refugees from Lebanon attempt to arrive on Cyprus via sea in order to claim asylum, at risk of torture and persecution when they return
  • Pregnant women often accepted, whilst other family members are sent back to Lebanon, including children that are consequently traumatized by separation and rejection

Cypriot response:

  • Cyprus signed an agreement with Lebanon to send back all illegal migrants who attempt to reach island by boat
  • Cypriot authorities say only migrants with refugee status have the right to be reunited with families
    • Since 2018, less than 2% have achieved refugee status (UNHCR)
    • This sentiment was emphasized by Cypriot Interior Minister

Criticisms:

  • UNHCR Cyprus: calls for Cypriot authorities to reunite families
  • EuroMed Rights will launch awareness raising campaign, urging the EU to “investigate violations” committed by the Cypriot border forces
  • Several lawmakers criticized Cypriot government’s migration policy, urging it to implement international and EU laws
