‘Der Spiegel’ reports the story of a Moldovan ‘guest worker’ in Italy, having left two children behind in order to earn a better wage and care for her family. However, being illegally in the country she is unable to travel and has not seen her children – now teenagers in more than 4 and half years. The children live alone, without adult supervision and also take care of the family farm. The article quotes the Child Rights Information Center in Chisinau saying that there are about 250,000 children-left-behind, i.e. children whose parents are working abroad.
