[Europe] Council of Europe demands 'open minds' for LGBTI migrants

15 Oct 2018

The Council of Europe (CoE) Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatović calls upon Member States to improve the human rights situation of LGBTI migrants.

Around the world LGBTI people face gross human rights violation and as Dunja Mijatović puts it ‘open minds’ are needed to improve their protection. Therefore, it must be acknowledged that some people have to leave their country in order to seek protection abroad. However, many of them also face severe difficulties in some CoE member states, including problems in proving their LGBTI-identity and in receiving appropriate protection. To tackle these issues a well founded fear on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics should explicitly be recognized as grounds for a refugee status.
