Sustainable mobility initiatives need the engagement of young people. That is the key finding of the European Mobility Week's workshop. European Mobility Week is an awareness-raising campaign for sustainable urban mobility, such as active mobility, public transport, and clean transport solutions.

A group of young people, aged 16–24 years old, took part in an online workshop where they discussed how important it is for policy-makers to work together with young people. ICLEI Europe moderated the event, which began with a presentation by Rut Einarsdóttir, from the Icelandic National Youth Council, who said that although many cities ask young people's opinions, they do not necessarily listen to them.

Sara Borei talked about the mission of Young Friends of the Earth, Europe, who collected young people's mobility visions to create a basis for the European Green Deal Proposal. This huge project involved over 3000 young people. They called for:

  • fewer cars
  • more cycling and pedestrian space
  • more sustainable transport
  • mobility education

European Mobility Week's main events are held 16–22 September every year. One of their most well-known programs is Car-Free day. In 2021, due to Covid-19, the event's theme will be 'Safe and healthy with sustainable mobility'.

Every year, specific cities are recognized for their work in sustainable mobility. Last year these were:

Mönchengladbach (Germany)

  • public engagement events
  • competition for children
  • converting parking places to play areas

Lilienthal (Germany):

  • organizing a car-free schoolday with the help of 55,000 schools and more than 60,000 pupils
