Intergenerational cycle (transmission violence) is a term used when adults who experienced and went through direct violence and long-term psychological pressure growing up show the same behaviour to his/her partner or children. If a trained professional or facilitator can successfully break this chain of ruthless behaviour in its early stages, however, it will drastically decrease gender-based violence.
The report, Breaking the Cycle of Intergenerational Violence: The Promise of Psychosocial Interventions to Address Children’s Exposure to Violence, commissioned by Promundo, describes three possible measures to take when children are exposed to physical and psychological violence.
- Working directly with children: sessions with an individual child with non-offending parents (CBT- cognitive behavioural therapy), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) guides help to resolve the social struggles, along with mindfulness and yoga.
- School-based intervention: support children and adolescents who display emotional trauma and physical violence. It is offered at every educational level (kindergarten, school, university), can help reduce PTSD, improve the student’s studies, and address social isolation and bullying.
- Community-level interventions: are child-friendly spaces set up in the aftermath of humanitarian disasters or conflict. These show an overall positive trend in terms of the psychosocial well-being of children.
The report shows that these measures not only improve children’s long-term health and well-being, but also prevent future violence against children and women. Hope International facilities and educational services will try to focus on taking action in early stages to prevent domestic and gender-based violence.
