A report by the United Nations Children’s Fund – UNICEF – reveals that in the first 3 months of 2019, roughly 16,000 migrants and refugees crossed the Mediterranean to enter Europe.

The UNICEF report notes that although the latest statistics represent a slight decrease in the number of migrants registered during the same period in 2018, the percentage of children among those numbers has increased from 1 out of 5 arrivals, to 1 out of 4.

3,800 children arrived on European coasts during the first 3 months of 2019. They join approximately 41,000 children being cared for in reception facilities in Greece, Italy and the Balkans.
