dr. Szilvia Gyurko, founder of Hintalovon Foundation approached the Central Statistical Office to see the numbers of children marrying. The shocking figure was that in 2016 388 girls married before their 18th birthday. The oldest groom was 61 years old, marrying a 17-year-old. Each year the number is between 300 and 400. For boys the numbers are much lower, in 2016 there were 37 boys, in 2015 31, in 2014 37, and the fiance was 21, and there was never an age difference of 45-50 years, as we can see for girls. It can be assumed unfortunately that many of the girls that have been married off early, and to a much older man, have been practically "bought", i.e. in exchange of a long-standing debt of sorts. This is the first time such data has been publicised in Hungary, and more work should be done on preventing these forced marriages.
