Reuters reports on the decision of the Supreme Court in Hungary and the developments around the case of unlawfully segregated Roma children.

The case

  • Classroom situation of ethnic tensions at an elementary school in Gyongyospata, east of Hungary.
  • As a triable issue, the school is believed to have been separating classes of Roma children between 2003 and 2017.    
  • Report from the Minority Ombudsman have found disturbing school divisions – Roma were kept on the ground floor of the school whereas classes of the majority of white classes were held on the upper floors.
  • This case went to the Supreme Court being an event sparklingly bringing additional ethnic tensions in other schools.

The ruling and community concerns

  • Roma children deemed to be segregated for about fourteen years will be compensated for the total amount of $310,000, i.e. $5,000 per child.
  • Local Roma expect increased ethnic tensions as the majority population is likely to stand up against the compensation provoked by the Prime Minister`s, Viktor Orban, position that the state should not respect the court ruling.
  • Roma community believe their children were denied good quality education.
