In an article published on the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County News Portal, psychologist Beáta Balogh explains why fair and open communication and cooperation between parents is important during and after divorce.

Divorce always has an impact on a child; they blame themselves, at any age, for the broken relationship between their parents. Parents, however, can give different and confusing reasons to the child for the divorce. Occasionally, the parent who does not want to divorce will be tedious, abusive, and the child will witness this. Yet, it is a mistake for one party to criticize the other in front of the child. ‘It would be very important for parents to understand that a child is able to love both parents and that it is not at the expense of one or the other’, Balogh said.

Unfortunately, it is often the case that one parent simply disappears from the child's life. This is very detrimental as children have a very difficult time surviving such abandonment, and they long for the other parent, sometimes even into their adulthood.

After a divorce, roles within the family are transformed, often with the eldest child being forced into an adult role.
