According to an Online Harms Survey, the majority of youth workers don’t feel confident in supporting young people due to insufficient knowledge; they cannot support them through proper prevention programmes as they don’t have sufficient information.

The biggest dangers facing youth are sexual exploitation, radicalisation, violence, and grooming of young people on the internet. One respondent told a story about a 12-year-old girl who was sexually abused. As most harm occurs through social media platforms, youth workers need help supporting young people online.

Facebook has made great efforts in minimising the presence of criminal organisations on Facebook and Instagram. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding Internet safety, which is often overlooked due to the benefits of the online world — for example access to education — which are especially important during this pandemic.
