In their new report ‘Turn the tide’ UNHCR is warning about the educational crisis, citing the data which indicates around 4 million refugee children around the world who do not go to school. The gender gap is especially concerning, as the report shows it is more difficult for refugee girls to enter the education system and complete it. According to the report refugee girls are 50% less likely to continue education after primary school, compared to refugee boys.

The UNHCR spokesperson for Southern Europe Carlotta Sami spoke at the event called "A refugee girl can't choose, but we can", which also served to launch the campaign "Mettiamocelo in Testa" (Let's Get It In Our Head). For this occasin Ms Sami urged everyone to support the education of refugee gilrs: "Forced to become adults before their time, deprived of their childhood, forced to give up their hopes and dreams, refugee girls are left no choice. But we can choose to ensure them a quality education and build a dignified future. This is why we are asking everyone to support the UNHCR campaign with an SMS or a call from a land line to 45588. Just two euros is all it takes to guarantee a month of school to a refugee girl."
