The key to the promotion of Roma rights: early and inclusive education

Viewpoint of the European Commissioner for Human rights

The European Commissioner for Human rights gives his viewpoint about how to improve Roma Rights. His propositions to end up with the vicious cycle of Roma exclusion are quality education and school at earliest stage. The preschools are important to increase the access of Roma children at the education system. The Commissioner points out the discriminations of Roma pupils by putting them in specialised school for backwardnesses; governments have to integrate Roma children in usual school. For a qualitative level of education, it is essential to have materials and teachers in the pupils’ mother tongue. Finally the school should involve the Roma parents in meeting them and propose them also basic education.
