Terre des hommes Romania participates in 2021 in the Swimathon campaign to raise funds to support children from vulnerable categories in the counties of Dolj, Gorj, Olt. Specifically, we aim to offer at least 50 "Kits for the future" to a group of children from disadvantaged communities (Roma or other ethnic groups, at risk of dropping out of school, children with parents working abroad, children exposed to poverty and exclusion social). Kits for the future mean tools, instruments or technologies that will help them test the job they dream of.

Lately, distance learning (or lack of it) has been added as an additional obstacle in the lives of children, especially the disadvantaged. Even in normal times, they lacked school counseling here in Romania and were thus not really prepared for the right future. If they are encouraged and guided to choose a job that motivates them, their chances increase.

The mini-project "Kits for the future of children" will be implemented during the Takeover Day campaign, in November, during a whole week (around November 20, when the International Day of the Rights of the Child is celebrated). In the nine editions of our Takeover Day campaign, we encouraged children to choose a job to test for a day and connect with mentors in the field. But we realized that they not only need to try a job or get advice, they need to prepare concretely for it, and mentors can't always help them in this regard. A future mechanic needs a tool kit, a make-up artist needs a kit, a journalist needs a tape recorder, and a programmer needs a tablet or a laptop.

What do we want ?

We want to raise 4.000 euros (20,000 lei) for these kits for children, between May 27 and June 27. This can only happen within the Swimathon campaign organized in 2021 by the Bucharest Community Foundation under the slogan "Waves of good". We need at least 10 volunteer swimmers (fundraisers) to help us.

Swimming is symbolic this year as well, due to the pandemic, so it can take place online, in the living room or even in the bathroom (if not at sea), depending on everyone's sense of humor and desire. You can also raise money in the traditional way - by phone, email, etc., but it's more fun and challenging to raise it through Facebook posts, for example ... This way the "waves of good" will be seen!

Who can be a ``swimmer`` / fundraiser who supports our cause?

Anyone who wants to support our cause (child, adult), wherever they are and no matter if they have time or not.

There are only two conditions: to believe in this specific cause and to be persevering enough to raise at least 200 euros =1,000 lei (individually) within a month, between May 27 and June 27. You can also sign up with a team (with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 people) to raise a larger amount.

What should a swimmer / fundraiser do for our cause?

Only 3 steps - registration, fundraising and participation in an event - optional (online or offline). The most important are the first two and we detail them here:

  • To register (alone or with a team) until May 21 on the Swimathon Bucharest platform, stating that he supports Terre des hommes- Kits for the future. Link here https://swimathonbucuresti.ro/inscriere-echipa/
  • Take part in a short training session on this fundraising campaign (Swimathon) on May 26 or 27
  • Then collect at least 1,000 lei for our cause. He will have time to do so between the time of registration and June 26
  • To participate, if he wants, on the weekend of June 26-27 in a small event (virtual or physical) that we will think about together, so that we can raise more money in those days. This can mean small funny or demanding challenges, according to every swimmer`s choice (he/she will be advised by us).

We take care of the administrative part. Once we have the money, we will make sure of the rest in the autumn: we organize the purchase and sending of the packages to the children, within the tenth edition of the Takeover Day campaign.

Beyond these options, any company can sponsor us for this mini-project with which we participate in Swimathon 2021. A tripartite contract will be concluded (with us and the Bucharest Community Foundation, the organizer of the campaign).

Calendar of the campaign

Between April 15 and May 21, we will convince at least 10 swimmers to support our cause and raise donations from their circle of friends / colleagues

Between May 27 and June 26, donations will be made directly on the Swimathon Bucharest website

On the weekend of June 26-27, the collective event takes place. Each swimmer can do something extraordinary (meet their own challenge, for example) to encourage a peak of donations. However, participation is not mandatory if the amounts have been raised by then, for example.

In October-November we prepare and implement the project, make the purchases and send the respective packages to the children.
