The UN has launched a new initiative aimed at ending child marriages around the world by the year 2030. Accorfding to the UN, child marriages violate the rights and potential of millions of girls and women. Girls who are married while still children face an increased likelyhood that they will not complete their education, face domestic violence, sexually transmitted diseases and also to die due to complications during child birth. This is a critical moment since if the current trends continue, 1 billion girls and women in 2030 will have been married as children.
