Hungary: author raises issues about minority Roma community's access to digital education amidst COVID-19 through profile of 12-year-old Mihaly H.

Effect of school closures:

  • Children of Roma community especially affected due to lack of technological resources available to them
    • 41% of Roma students have access to cable and mobile internet, 13% do not have access to either (as of August 2020)
  • Children of Roma community become isolated and suffer from gaps in their education
  • No possibility of communication with teachers without access to digital media
  • Lack of lessons lead to serious gap in education

Socio-economic situation of Roma community:

  • Living conditions worsening due to loss of employment, as Covid-19 lockdowns have eradicated option for seasonal employment
  • Despite some efforts made, Hungarian authorities do not offer protection for daily wage laborers  
  • Due to lack of funds, basic needs such as food or accommodation of families hardly met 

12-year-old Mihaly H.:

  • Due to lack of technological resources, he has no access to digital education
  • Mihaly's family is struggling to survive under current circumstances: as one of nine children, Mihaly’s family struggles to feed and provide accommodation for themselves
  • Dependent on municipalities one meal a day program
