Romania: Save The Children urges Romanian government to take urgent measures to improve children’s exposure to violence, poverty, social exclusion, and lack of education.

Major issues identified by Save the Children Romania:

In Romania,

  • 1 in 2 children subjected to abuse (physical, emotional and/or sexual)
  • 1 in 3 children at risk of poverty and social exclusion
  • 6 in 1000 children die before reaching the age of 1
  • Every year, 750 girls under the age of 15 become mothers
  • 78,000 children with disabilities are not provided with necessary educational or social support

Save the Children Romania urges government to:

  • Stop the “state of unconstitutionality in which the political programs of the parties, the state budget laws and the decisions on local budget allocations have deepened every year”
  • To implement specific measures to improve problems currently faced by children in Romania
  • Save the Children Romania identified ten crucial points of action, including post-pandemic psychotherapeutic assistance for children and the protection of institutionalized children

The European Child Guarantee

  • An initiative of the European Commission which aims to ensure that the most vulnerable children in the EU have access to basic human rights and live in suitable conditions
  • Save the Children Romania regards it as an essential tool for children in Romania
    • Once adopted, “the Romanian Parliament and Government will be obliged to take concrete measures to ensure effective and free access to quality medical and education services, early childhood care, at least one healthy meal each school day for all children, adequate housing and proper nutrition.”
