‘New Europe’ reports that Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg, following the release of his report concerning a visit to Slovakia said that “Concrete action to counter anti-Gypsyism and discrimination against Roma must be given priority by the authorities of Slovakia”. Hammarberg is concerned that many Roma children in Slovakia continue to receive education of lower quality than their non-Roma peers due to policies and practices resulting in segregation. Another concern is that many Roma children are placed in institutional care.
