It has been 10 years since the war began in Syria. Some youth have grown up knowing nothing but conflict. Forced marriages, hired as soldiers, suffering both physical and emotional casualties are common experiences for them. Children born during the war have never known peace, and their parents feared bringing them into a world where safety was nowhere to be found. They must be vigilant at all times, even at a refugee camp.

'Resources are stretched thin and many don’t have access to basic amenities amidst threats such as disease and exposure to sub-zero temperatures.' For them, education is the least of their concerns, and they live in constant fear of not having food, being abused or exploited. These children's futures are being ruined as they are deprived of schooling. The education system is overtaxed. Child labor has also become uncontrollable due to low pay, and COVID-19 has made the situation worse.  There are initiatives and NGOs trying to assist the children, but they face impediments such as child labor, language barriers and a complicated enrollment system.

'The world must be cognizant of the fact that, by not taking measures to uphold Syrian children’s education, they are damaging their own future in the process as well.'

The effect of these children going without an education will be felt not only within Syria or the Middle East. Amity is the only solution to save Syrian children from this continuous misery and suffering. To lend a helping hand to every family, humanitarian aid should be scaled up. Syrians also deserve to live in peace with the knowledge and confidence that the international community will stand ready to help them.
