Violence happens every day. It happens unexpectedly. It is an invisible part of everyday communication, but it leaves visible marks on everyone — visible, but often masked and unusual. Like a blue beard for example…

Is violence a display of power? How do we recognize violence in everyday communication? How can we resist violence without reproducing it? How can girls detect the threat of domestic violence and sexual exploitation underneath kind words and promises of a bright future? How can children resist cyberbullying? How do we know why 'the beard is blue'?

The play 'Blue Beard - Not a Fairytale Marriage', is based on stories of women who have experienced domestic violence. Young people living in а family-type accommodation center (FTAC) in Burgas, discussed the aforementioned questions with the play's director, Vasilena Radeva, and actresses, Bogdana Kotareva and Elena Dimitrova from Panic Button Theatre. Two important questions the young people asked and discussed with the actors were: why does the victim stay with their abuser; and how can each of us help a friend in a similar situation?

Children who grow up without parents are particularly vulnerable

Although highly emotional, this topic unites these young people and the FTAC staff. They joined the Know-How Center for the Alternative Care for Children, NBU project 'And Is It So? - Stories of Power and Violence'. Together with professionals from the Demetra Association, they studied manifestations of types of violence, learned to recognize them, and to prevent the danger of falling into a situation of sexual abuse and exploitation for themselves and their friends.

Violence best survives in silence

Children who grow up without parents are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation, as it is often disguised as promises of love, a better life, a quick income and a better future. Often the adults who care for them are not trained to talk to young people about these risks. Avoiding the topic and creating a taboo around it further increases the danger as violence best survives in silence…

The 'And Is It So? - Stories of Power and Violence" project is funded by the Oak Foundation, within the Learning and Action Partnership Network.
