Women’s and children’s rights have been repeatedly violated on many points in Turkey, and now lawmakers aim to cause them more harm.

  • In 2014, the Turkish president said equality between men and women is 'against nature'. In 2016, he also said a woman’s life is incomplete if she does not have children.
  • In 2017, 409 women were murdered by a partner or family member, up from 237 in 2016.
  • In Turkey, 38% of women have suffered physical or sexual violence at the hands of a partner.
  • A 2018 report showed that more than 482,000 girls under the age of 18 were married in the last decade.

The new 'marry-your-rapist' bill – which would allow sexual abusers to avoid punishment if they marry their victims  to protect and safeguard family 'honour' – will be introduced by the end of January 2020.

If accepted, it would create a clear path for child abuse and sexual exploitation.

Countries like Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Palestine have already removed these legal loopholes for rapists, and now it is Turkey’s turn to make a significant change for women and children.
