[Turkey] Turkey stops 300,000 irregular migrants en route to EU so far this year

Between 1st of January and 12th September Turkey has stopped 269.059 irregular migrants crossing Europe, the highest ever. The number is expected to grow by the end of the year.

Previous years figures of intercepted illegal migrants were:

  • In 2018 268,003
  • In 2017 175.752
  • In 2016 174.466
  • In 2015 146.485

Turkey fights against irregular migration, mostly in the northwestern province of Edirne and the Aegean Sea. But the migrations is growing, many people try to escape from war zones, hunger and poverty and try to reach Europe for a better life.
