The law “On children protection from sexual abuse and sexual exploitation” amending Criminal Code of Ukraine came into force on April 18 on the day of its official publication.

This law criminalizes sexual relations between adults and persons who have not reached the age of 16. This way, the age of sexual maturity is set (earlier it has been established through the examination).

Thus, adults who have natural and unnatural sexual relations with a person under the age of 16 are punishable by imprisonment of up to 5 years. If a close relative commits this crime to a minor, he/she could be imprisoned for a term of up to 8 years with the loss of the right to hold certain posts or engage in certain activities for up to 3 years.
