On 12th of July 2018, the Ministry of Education and Science, together with Save the Children, UNICEF, and the Education Cluster, hosted in Kyiv a round table discussion on “The Safe Schools Declaration: how to protect education from attack in the Ukrainian context?”. This was attended by the Minister of Education and Science, representatives of the Ministries of Justice, Defense, and Foreign Affairs, Interior, Oblast administrations, representatives of the Ombudsman, the Government of Norway, and a number of other international and local NGOs and UN agencies working in the area of protection and education.
“The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine fully supports the ideology of the Safe Schools Declaration and hopes that in future Ukraine will be able to join it.”, stated Ms. Liliya Hrynevych, Minister of Education and Science, in her introductory speech.
She thanked Save the children and Education Cluster for their support in gathering and analyzing data regarding attached and usage of schools by militaries. She also expressed her gratitude to UNICEF for its efforts which allow children to access to quality and safe education within the contact line.
She noted that the creation of safe conditions for the training of children on the contact line and near it, as well as the involvement of students and potential students living in the occupied territories in the Ukrainian education, is a priority not only for the Ministry of Education and Science, but also for the whole state.
