On December 15th Germany’s Federal Foreign Office and IOM, the UN Migration Agency’s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) have launched the Migration Data Portal in Berlin which aims at bringing together data about global migration trends in one place. It was developed by IOM and with the support of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) with financial support from the US Department of State and Germany’s Federal Foreign Office.
According to the IOM's general director, William Lacy Swing, this portal will be key in helping the nowadys needs for based-on-facts responses to migration events. “At a time when migration is high on the global agenda, it is essential that everyone has access to the key facts and figures about migration, and that we better understand the strengths and weaknesses of data on migration,” said Frank Laczko, Director of IOM´s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre.
This portal provides information not only on figures regarding numbers of immigrants but it also reveals information on many other aspects such as trends of migration, makes connections to the developement, student and children data, data on migration policies etc.
