For children in foster care, kinship care or adoptive homes, life constantly brings up challanges like clinical and social ones, and complex issues.

An updated AAP clinical report describes these challanges and provides pediatricians practical guidance and resources.

These kids have special concerns, protections, which are the following:

  • they need an increased incidence of physical, developmental and mental health concerns
  • early identification and coordination of services is needed for doctors to suport caregivers
  • early documentation of issues is also crucial in establishing the need for financial subsidies
  • the support of pediatricians by becoming aware of federal and state legislation is also needed
  • the Family First Prevention Services Act (signed in 2018) also there with reforms to help keep families together
  • for pedatricians it is also essential to find out about the legislation that supports continuity of school placement and academic success.

Here are some Recommendations for pediatricians:

  • they can counsel caregivers about the need to understand the child’s questions
  • racial or cultural differences may occur, so it is useful to help understand the differences
  • interdisciplinary teams can be very useful
  • Provide surveillance and screening to identify neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • give parents advises on the current and potential medical, developmental and behavioral problems
  • mental health referrals can be very important with children and parents as they may experience losses

In conclusion, the report highlights how the simple interactions can have meaningful influences on child and adolescent resilience.
