According to the research of Amanda Sacker, Professor of Lifecourse Studies at University College London, adults with care-experiences, are 70% more likely to die earlier.

In the longitudinal study more than 350,000 people participated, who had been in care between 1971 and 2001 and the focus points were on whether and how they had died.

Results showed that those who had been in care were more likely to die compared to those, who died from natural causes in that timescale. While there was only a 40% increased risk for those in care, compared with living with parents in 1971, this risk had grown to 360% in 2001.

The comments of Professor Sacker on the findings are the following:

  • People live longer and healthier, but not those who spent time as children in care don't,
  • Although children in care are the most vulnerable in society, they do not get enough attention,
  • Mental health needs stronger focus,
  • Health services should be expanded to include support well beyond young adulthood for children in care.
