The Youth Justice Board (YJB) and Ministry of Justice (MoJ) published New Youth Justice Statistics for 2019/20 which covers data on both self-harm and restraint incidents and disproportionality in the youth justice system. Unfortunately, according to the data following issues are increased in both areas in five years:

  • The number of incidents of restrictive physical interventions (19 % in the last year/around 7,500 incidents) and more than 5,000 incidents included the use of pain-inflicting techniques.
  • The number of self-harm (35%) which some 627 self-harm injuries required medical treatment in 2019/20 with 69 children needing hospital treatment.
  • The number of children who received a caution or sentence (82 % over the last 10 years, with a 12 % drop in the last year).
  • The first-time entrants to the YJS (84% increased compared to 2009/12 % lower than 2018)
  • The number of children and young people with a previous conviction reoffended (0.2% lower than 2018/19, higher than a decade ago)
  • The proportion of black children cautioned or sentenced (last 10 years)
  • Asian children who received a caution or sentence compared with the previous year (10%)
