Two social workers from the Southwark Council have died after contracting the coronavirus. It is unknown if they became infected while working. Many social workers fear for their health as there is a national shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), and no national protocols for safe working.

The British Association of Social Workers (BASW) said that they will lobby to get all frontline workers proper personal protective equipment to safely continue their jobs and keep the vulnerable people they serve safe.

The lack of protective equipment also affects other workers and unfortunately these people cannot stay home as their job is critical to the public, but everyone else who can, should be at home and away from other people in order to stop the virus from spreading.
