A Lords committee report published on the 26th July stated the failure of both the UK and the EU to care for the thousands of unaccompanied migrant children moving across the region, dismissing them as “someone else’s problem”. Over 100,000 migrant children have gone missing, vulnerable targets of traffickers living in dirty and dangerous conditions. Europe is struggling to respond to the demands set by the ongoing refugee/migrant crisis, despite several years of turmoil. A representative for Save the Children states in the report,  that the “overstretching of resources had created incentives for national authorities not to treat minors as children”. Many are left in squalid conditions, in temporary and makeshift accommodation with little access to basic resources, becoming distrustful and suspicious of authorities. As stated in the report, “The better the quality of care, the less the risk of them going missing”. The committee had been given accounts of children damaging their fingertips to avoid registration, whilst often, authorities were reluctant to accept children’s accounts. It is evident that European states and EU institutions need to take a greater responsibility for migrant children at risk of trafficking in Europe.
