This publication introduces some of the basic concepts of youth and children’s rights to participation. The notion of participation is a complex and multifaceted issue, but primarily, it is a matter of democracy. The right to participation has been part of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, despite our constant efforts to advocate for children’s right to participation, turning it into a reality remains challenging.
The document gathers good practice examples of participation from both children’s and young people’s perspectives within the Nordic region. A group of youth organisations, administrative agency, local and regional authorities shared their tips, ideas, and cautionary tales focused at ensuring the right to participation for children and young people. Participation in society and having the agency over one’s life will lead to better decision making, more engaged citizens, and more inclusive society.
