This report forms part of a series of research packages produced by the NSPCC which aims at better understanding the link between neglect and other forms of harm. In this particular publication attention falls on the relationship between neglect and child sexual exploitation. The different forms of sexual exploitation (from inter-familial to commercial) are systematically explored and the impacts of sexual exploitation both physically, developmentally and psychologically in the short and long term are examined. Although limited research has been carried out detailing the relationship between neglect and sexual exploitation, one study indicates that both neglect and sexual abuse each increase the likelihood of 'selling sex' by the age of 29. Thus, the effects of abuse persist well into adult life. As well as attempting to outline the nature of the relationship between neglect and sexual exploitation, this report also aims to explain that relationship by reference to such things as social and psychological factors and systems of protection etc.
