The ILO and Walk Free Foundation, in collaboration with IOM, have jointly published a report finding that over 40 million people were victims of modern slavery in 2016, of which an estimated 152 million (1 in 4) are children. Released during the recent UNGA, the new estimates show that women and girls are disproportionately affected by modern slavery, accounting for 71% of the overall total.

The report gives an outline of the scale and manifestations of modern slavery, with particular attention paid to forced labour exploitation, forced sexual exploitation of adults and sexual exploitation of children, and state-imposed forced labour.
