Date of publication:  10 Mar 2020 Author:  The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) UNICEF World Health Organization (WHO Publisher:  IFRC UNICEF and WHO Publication type:  Guide / Guidelines / Principle

This guide aims to help the protection of children and schools from the transmission of the COVID-19 virus. It provides critical considerations and practical checklists to keep schools safe and guidelines to implement emergency plans for educational facilities. In case of closure mitigation action against the possible negative effect on children's learning or in case of remaining open guidance on how to provide information for children to protect themselves, mental health support, and hygiene practices.

Education can encourage students to become advocates for disease prevention and control at home, in school, and in their community by talking to others about how to prevent the spread of viruses. Maintaining safe school operations or reopening schools after a closure, requires many considerations, but if done well, can promote public health.

The new guidance also offers helpful tips and checklists for parents and caregivers, as well as children and students themselves.
