More than 8,000 young people aged under 18 arrive in the UK each year claiming to be fleeing violence and persecution. Some arrive alone; some arrive with their families. The relationship between asylum and immigration is a contentious issue. But many of these children will remain legally in the UK for at least a few years, particularly those who arrive on their own. The government acknowledges the need to provide greater levels of protection and care for separated children, even if it rejects their claim for asylum. However, young people often have difficulties receiving the levels of care, support and services they need. Furthermore, asylum seekers and refugees are often marginalized and isolated, partly due to people’s prejudices.
