ROBIN Handbook

The handbook “Migration and Integration into formal Education” developed within the ROBIN project (ref. no. 2015-1-RO01-KA204-015001) addresses the issue of poor educational attainment of the children and youth affected by migration. Because of their travel status, they are often either school drop-outs or experience disrupted periods of school attendance, being most likely to be included into Second chance type educational programmes.

These children are at risk to lose interest in spending time at school, and finally drop out, give up their studies, leave school or apprenticeship with incomplete certification and expose themselves to social exclusion. There is a need for appropriate teaching methods for educators to use in order to make learning attractive and adapted to the needs of these children and youth in order to decrease the rate of school drop out of this system as well.

This handbook supports educators and other professionals who come in contact with children and young people affected by migration, such as school directors, caregivers, child care professionals and social workers to work efficiently with this category of youngsters by using creative and interactive teaching methods.

By reading and using this handbook:

  • Educators will get acquainted with the inclusive learning methodology being able to implement it themselves with their beneficiaries.
  • NGO representatives in the field can familiarize with the situation of children affected by migration in Europe and barriers to their active participation in education.
  • School/Training Center Management can have an overview of the benefits of inclusive education as means to activate young migrants and prevent school drop-out.
  • Decision Makers can have a better understanding of the barriers to inclusion that affected persons face; and the needs and challenges of Second Chance programmes and involved persons.

The handbook was launched on the 19th October 2017 within the final conference of the project in Vienna, Austria that gathered project partners and other interested stakeholders.

It is available in all partner languages (English, Italian, German, Bulgarian, Spanish, Romanian) and also French.
