Children missing educaiton in England

The briefing is based on findings from data provided by 142 local authorities in England on the number of children who are missing education, and the reason for doing so. The paper provides a brief summary of the data collected and explores some practice and policy issues affecting work with children who are missing education. The report estimates that 14,800 children miss education at any one time across England. The whereabouts of 3000 children would not be known. 5000 children await a place in school or alternative provision. This includes those who have moved and ‘hard to place’ children where parents had disputed or not taken up a place offered. Based on the findings NCB recommends that a national review is conducted on the issue and to harmonise the way data is being collected.
