Exploring how services and parents can work in partnership to support the social and emotional development of under fives.

Emotional wellbeing and right mental health is very important in the very early childhood. This research explored the published literature in 2019 in UK and policy development about supporting very young children emotionally and mentally - from conception to reception.

Topics that the research and policy team at National Children’s Bureau covered:

  • The extent and nature of mental health support needs in under 5 years
  • Interventions offered by different experts for families with a kid aged 0-5 years
  • Experiences of families of early years' interventions / programmes
  • Models of parental engagement
  • Parental knowledge of the social and emotional needs of 0-5 year olds

The review focuses mainly on UK-based literature and is followed by an analysis of the public policies about support for social and emotional development and mental health under 5 years across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The research for the report was carried out pre-COVID-19, but the implications of the pandemic have been take in consideration in the summary report.
