This Internet Matters report describes how vulnerable teens can be supported in leading safer online lives.
The report is based on a survey completed by 15,000 11-17-year old children, 6,500 of whom identified as having one or more of five types of vulnerability.
The report details:
- the types of risk they encounter (Conduct, Compulsion, Content, Contact; Cyberaggression and Cyberscams.),
- by the vulnerability they face (family and social, communication, SEND, psychological and physical).
The report focuses on the need for better support for children to have a safer online experience. The challenge is to find the balance between enabling vulnerable teenagers to take advantage of digital tools and technology, and recognising that vulnerable young people may come to harm if they are not supported and helped. The report also addresses the implications for professionals.
Internet Matters works collaboratively across industry, government, and with schools to reach UK families with tools, tips, and resources to help children benefit from connected technology, smartly and safely. This report was published with the partnership of Adrienne Katz and Dr. Aiman El Asam.
