This review examines how arts-based practices contribute to the mental health and resilience of children and young people aged between 11 and 18 years. Drawing on findings from 8 papers, the study identified a number of positive effects generated by participating in arts activities, including on “self-confidence, self-esteem, relationship building and a sense of belonging, qualities which have been associated with resilience and mental wellbeing.” The review provides a number of recommendations for future research, highlighting the need for rigorously conducted controlled studies and more high quality qualitative research.
