The Bulgarian Council for Refugees and Migrants has published the second edition of the academic bulletin “Refugees – Today and Tomorrow” – one valuable contribution covering a number of present-day topics of importance, namely:

  • Housing policies and practices in Bulgaria introducing recent research on municipal housing policies, while discussing various challenges for the successful integration of refugees in the country such is the lack of strategic support increasing the risk of homelessness and limiting the implementation of all other integration sectors – education, employment, health, etc.
  • Presenting the route of those seeking international protection in Bulgaria – starting from border crossing experience, registration of asylum claim and formal interview, reception system, procedural guarantees for unaccompanied migrant children, rules governing the activation of the Dublin procedure for children, as well as the possibilities for the reunification of their families.
  • Consultation on the international protection procedure within the Bulgarian context highlighting availability for legal aid services specifically for unaccompanied children, as well as discussing the Best Interest and Age Assessment current practices.

In fact, the State Agency for Refugees initiated 18 bone age assessments in 2019, widely accepted as providing inaccurate calculations, and thus 100% of the conducted medical evaluations indicate age of maturity.

Next issue is coming up in September and will be also available on the academic portal dedicated to the topic of forced migration.

This Bulletin is available only in Bulgarian language.
