Join our virtual party to celebrate the launch of a new book written by Emma Harewood.
This book tells the story of the establishment of the first UK Barnahus (Child House), The Lighthouse. It is a safe space for children and young people that experience sexual abuse. This is a personal story, an inspirational manual and an invitation for you to change the system where you live and work, for children that live with the aftermath of child sexual abuse.
Following the review of the pathway of child sexual abuse in 2015, Emma set out to persuade and influence her colleagues, commissioners and the government, to make a change for children and young people experiencing sexual abuse in London. Three years later, the Lighthouse was opened, with over 350 children a year referred for support. Based on the original Icelandic Barnahus model, the Lighthouse transforms the recovery process, offering medical, social care, therapeutic, investigative and advocacy services, all under one roof.
Emma Harewood hopes to inspire:
- Commitment from the government to invest in more Child Houses (Barnahus) across the UK.
- Commitment from local commissioners in health, social care and the police to work together to transform services for children experiencing sexual abuse.
- Professionals and the public to start to be the champion for change in their area.
- Service design to be rooted in a detailed assessment of local needs, acknowledging the good practice in place locally, and listening to the voice of children and adult survivors.
Emma said “I hope this book inspires people that they can be the change for children experiencing child sexual abuse in their area.”
