About the webinar
The Bright Spots Programme is a collaboration between Coram Voice (a national children’s rights charity) and the University of Oxford. Starting in 2015, this innovative research project helps local authorities across the United Kingdom systematically listen to their children in care and care leavers about the things that are important to them. The aim of the programme is to ensure that the views and experiences of children influence service development and strategic thinking in the systems that are set up to support them. The Bright Spots surveys (‘Your Life, Your Care’ for children in care, and ‘Your Life Beyond Care’ for care-experienced young adults) were developed together with children and young people with experience of the care system by asking them what they felt was important for a good life. Based on what they told us, the surveys ask questions about the relationships children have with the people around them, their rights, their feelings and the support they get, and the opportunities they have to learn, play and develop the skills and resilience they will need in later life. Over the last 6 years, we have gathered responses from over 10,000 children and young people making it the largest study of its kind to have been carried out in the UK.
The webinar will share national findings and learning from the Bright Spots Programme, including:
- What do children and young people in and beyond care say is important for their well-being?
- How can relationships with social workers and other professionals impact young people’s ability to have a good life?
- How children’s services in different parts of the country have used creative solutions to make life better for the children and young people in their care
