About the webinar 'Making safe spaces to talk about unsafe relationships: Risks, ethics and safety when working in partnership with young people affected by sexual violence':

Dr Camille Warrington of the International Centre, University of Bedfordshire (UK) will be sharing her insights into participatory research with young people and exploring good practice. During the webinar Camille will be sharing examples of participatory research with young people affected by sexual violence and discussing ethical and practical aspects of this work.  The presentation will highlight the value of involving young people affected by sexual violence and exploitation in research, exploring challenges, risks and strategies to develop meaningful and safe participation. It will cover:

• The significance of and rationale for direct involvement of young people affected by sexual violence in research and policy development;
• Key ethical issues encountered. This will include issues relating to representation, identity and stigma; working in group settings; recognising and responding to trauma; managing risk and issues relating to ownership or editorial control of resources developed by young people;
• Strategies used by the International Centre to address some of these issues.

The presentation will take approximately 30 minutes, after which there will be a virtual Q&A session. This webinar will be of particular interest to researchers and frontline professionals including social workers, youth workers, and voluntary sector staff working (or wishing to work) in participatory ways with young people affected by sexual violence or related issues.

About the lecturer:

Dr Camille Warrington is a Senior Research Fellow: Children and Young People’s Participation at the International Centre: Researching Child Sexual Exploitation, Violence and Trafficking at the University of Bedfordshire in the UK. She is an applied social researcher with a particular interest in participatory research practice, creative and inclusive methodologies and service user involvement. In recent years Camille’s work has focused on children with experiences of sexual violence in the UK and in particular their experiences of service responses including police, social care and third sector support. She is particularly interested in how children’s decision-making informs or is marginalised from these processes and the implications for children’s safety.
Recent research areas include a participatory study of young people’s experiences of criminal justice processes in child sexual exploitation (CSE) cases (Beckett and Warrington 2014); developing a series of four films on gang-associated sexual violence devised by groups of young people; the Be Healthy Project training specialist young health advocates and What Works for Us, a national network of CSE affected service users and adoctorate exploring service user’s involvement in decision making about CSE services.
