This course will examine the role of assessment in child protection work. We will discuss how a structured systematic approach to assessment can help professionals make better decisions about how to identify issues, and respond appropriately to support children and families.

We will explore both theory and practical application through a variety of interactive exercises like videos, case studies and other resources designed to help understand the skills and concepts covered in the course.

This course is specifically for those professionals involved with assessments of a child’s safety and wellbeing. It may also be of interest to those wanting a broader understanding of assessments and how they support other efforts to protect children.

The modules of the course are as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Types of assessment
  • Assessment process
  • Dimensions of wellbeing
  • Assessing risk
  • Child abuse
  • Ethical considerations
  • Analysis
  • Conclusion
  • Interactive scenarios

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise the value of making an assessment, and the different types of assessments that may be carried out in connection with child protection
  • Understand the ethical considerations that need to be ensured throughout the assessment process
  • Identify ways of promoting the meaningful participation of children and families
  • Identify the appropriate sources of information on which to base an assessment
  • Be able to identify risk factors, strengths and protective factors
  • Be able to identify the main forms of abuse, symptoms and manifestations
  • Appreciate the links between risk and vulnerability in terms of managing risk
  • Understand the importance of analysing information and have a model for doing this in a structured way.

The modules covered in the course can be completed at one’s own pace. Each module is self-directed using a variety of exercises, such as quizzes and case studies. In total, the course should take approximately 6 to 8 hours to complete. Upon successful completion of the course test, a certificate of completion is available.

It is worth noting that some organizations and countries use a different word for 'assessment' - such as a ‘social report’, ‘social enquiry’ or a ‘case study’.
