Satetement on Impact on Children of New Law in Hungary - UNICEF Regional Director

GENEVA, 9 March 2017 – "UNICEF is alarmed by the adoption of a new law in Hungary that foresees the mandatory detention of refugee and migrant children over 14 years of age. We appeal to the President to treat all children as children first and foremost, before signing this new law.

Members of the Destination Unknown Campaign are deeply concerned about the Hungarian Parliament’s approval of a law contemplating the placement of all asylum-seekers, including children, in detention.

Detention is never in a child’s best interests and has severe consequences on their physical and psychological well being. Children are children first and foremost and should be protected, not locked up.

UNHCR is deeply concerned at a new law which has been voted this morning at the Hungarian Parliament and which foresees the mandatory detention of all asylum seekers, including many children, for the entire length of the asylum procedure.

EVAW Technical Coordinator ("Implementing Norms, Changing Minds")

The UN Women Country Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) is seeking a EVAW Technical Coordinator, who will be responsible for the implementation of the UN Women programme "Implementing Norms, Changing Minds" under the overall supervision of the Resident Representative and the Programme Specialist, based in Sarajevo, and in close collaboration with the Regional Programme Manager and the BiH EVAW Manager. The Technical Coordinator will liaise with government officials, civil society organizations, donors, and other UN Agencies for ensuring successful UN Women programme implementation.
